Project overview.
Accessible, performant and intuitive web applications which meet the needs of the public sector.
The client.
travelWEST is the transport information service of the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority and North Somerset Council. We have worked with them on a number of projects, most significantly the 2025 rebrand of all travelWEST websites and apps.
The brief.
travelWEST provide a suite of inter-connected web applications which provide travel information to users in the West of England combined authority areas.
Lunar have looked after the travelWEST digital presence for many years. In that time we have overseen several projects which have ranged from integrating critical travel disruptions APIs, through to a complete rebuild of the Journey Planning application used by thousands of users every day.
Working closely with the client during a rebrand, we led a creative phase which saw a UX audit of all applications - this then informed web usage guidelines, wireframes and designs for a rehaul of the website and complete rebuild of the journey planner.

The approach.
In sync with the timing of the rebrand work, Lunar identified that the client’s legacy Journey Planner codebase was becoming dated, difficult to update and a blocker to building new features. We identified a new tech stack, infrastructure and hosting solution to significantly improve performance and reliability - important metrics when delivering real-time travel information to users.
The Journey Planner is built with Next.js 15, leveraging static site generation for most of the site, with pages updated using Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) to ensure users receive up-to-date information. Further to static generation, Lunar developed a Laravel API to intercept and cache external API responses to provide lightning quick data to the Journey Planner at both build and request time.
Lunar also oversaw the creation of a brand new Interactive Public Network Map which gives users access to the latest public transport information, helping a wide range of users including those who wish to use public transport, but aren’t so familiar with their local area.

The results.
Lunar has worked with travelWEST since 2020 overseeing several important projects including a rebrand of their entire web presence, the creation of a user notifications platform and multiple API integrations helping to provide the local public with the information that they need to make better and more sustainable transport decisions.
